Reading

Some children at the beginning of KS2 will continue to have additional lessons in phonics as required to support them in their reading. We use a vast array of reading schemes in colour-coded bands and children also have online access to Bug Club with hundreds of ebooks available at school and at home. Within this online package, there are reading challenges and rewards for regular reading. In KS2 there is an even greater emphasis placed on comprehension skills.

We expect all children to read daily throughout school and as children develop their decoding and reading skills, there needs to be an increased focus on comprehension -developing skills of retrieval, inference and broadening vocabulary. The assessments at the end of Year 6 have an emphasis, approximately 80% of the test, on these skills.

We encourage parents to oversee their children’s reading and spend time talking about what has been read. School holds regular parent information evenings to support you in helping your child make the highest level of progress possible. We find that children who read and share books with their parents for a little time every day make the most rapid progress.
